Liane, Anthony and I have just returned from this year’s Symposium East in New York. The event was a great success with over 400 Advertisers and Publishers congregating for a full day of intensive networking.
The day started early with general sessions kicked off with our co-Presidents Yaz Iida and Jonathan Levine welcoming the attendees. The founder CEO of Rakuten, Hiroshi Mikitani, then shared how Rakuten is the leading Internet services provider in a full range products and services.
The keynote speaker Jonah Leher, Author of How We Decide and Editor at Wired, transfixed the audience with a presentation on “The Neuroscience of Online Shopping”. Put more simply, the science of how the brain handles decision-making while shopping online, which was very interesting and I will try and outline some of the highlights at a later stage. Wendy Hutter from PSB also presented our US TrendWatch 2009 market research results on “The State of Online Shopping… From Recession Shoppers to Value Hunters.”
After lunch, Joan Rivers kicked things off with a hilarious monologue that included commentary on everything from online shopping, to beauty pageants, to the challenges of growing older in the Internet age. Many attendees were Twittering the results as the event unfolded. Special congratulations go out to LEGO for winning the Best International Advertiser award for their US and UK programs.
A busy afternoon of networking ensued with the over 50 exhibitors at the DealMaker session. Even after 3 hours of DealMaker the room was still full at 6pm as several sponsors closed the session by raffling off some fantastic prizes including phones, software and lots of gift certificates for great products and services.
To wrap-up a fantastic day, we all gathered at the stylish rooftop barof the Gansevoort Hotel in the meatpacking district of Manhattan. The fabulous skyline views and the cool DJ vibes became the perfect ending to a great day.
It was a great day to attend and I am certainly looking forward to the planning of the 2nd Symposium UK, which is currently pencilled in the diary for April 2009, and for expanding on the UK partnermaking that was started at our inaugral event this past April.
